About the App

What is PACEme Care?

PACEme Care is a pacing and self-management app for people living with energy-limiting illness. It combines heart rate, movement, sleep, HRV and daily check-ins into an approximate personal pacing estimate — your Pace Points — and updates the guidance as new information arrives.

Unlike a generic fitness app, PACEme is designed around the energy envelope, PEM and autonomic symptoms. It considers delayed worsening and learns from ordinary stable, improving and worsening days, but it cannot guarantee that it will predict a crash or define a safe activity allowance.

Core pacing data stays on your device by default. Optional online actions explain what is sent before you use them.

Initial Setup

Getting set up for the first time.

First launch has three parts: a short personal setup, a screenshot walkthrough of the app, and a live setup hub that helps you connect the services and devices you want to use. You can skip optional tasks and return to them later.

Choose your starting experience

Choose Care for a simpler, lower-cognitive-load view or Care Plus for the fuller readout. On first setup, this choice also sets the matching suggestion behaviour: Care applies suitable protective changes automatically, while Care Plus asks before applying them.

You can change these separately later: the mode button on the main screen changes what you see; App Settings → Your primary mode changes whether protective suggestions are automatic or approval-first.

Set your illness profile

Choose Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Very Severe as the starting point for your daily pacing budget. You can change this later in Pace Settings.

Tip: If you are unsure, choose the option that most closely reflects what you can reliably sustain now, rather than what you can manage on an unusually good day.

Set your personal starting points

The calibration survey asks about your step limit, heart-rate warning point, sleep goal, and what hard physical and mental effort mean for you. These are personal starting points, not crash boundaries or medical thresholds.

Not sure of an answer? Use your best current estimate. You can run the calibration again from Pace Settings.

Choose optional signals

Before setup finishes, you can tell PACEme if you have POTS, dysautonomia, or POTS-like symptoms; allow phone screen time to be used as an extra cognitive-load signal; and enable weather guidance for heat or pressure changes. All three are optional and can be changed later in Pace Settings.

Follow the visual walkthrough

PACEme next shows a guided screenshot tour for your current view. The Care walkthrough focuses on the simpler daily screens; the Care Plus walkthrough also covers deeper analysis and controls. You do not have to finish it in one sitting: close it and replay it later without changing your health data.

Replay it any time: open App Settings → Replay walkthrough. Switch the main-screen view first if you want to see the other version.

Use the first-day setup hub

The final screen opens real setup actions in the app. It helps you turn on morning and evening reminders, connect a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor, enable step and sleep import through Health Connect, take your first HRV reading, and complete your first morning check-in.

Flexible setup: Complete the five cards in any order, skip any for now, and come back through App Settings → Run first-day setup again. Each card checks the real app state and shows whether it is complete.


Daily Routine

Your daily PACEme walkthrough.

Once set up, your daily routine with PACEme takes around 5–10 minutes total. The rest happens automatically in the background.

Morning — before getting up
HRV Measurement

If you track HRV, sync it from your wearable or take a camera reading in PACEme. Measuring at a similar time and position each day makes changes from your own usual level easier to interpret.

Morning — after waking
Daily Check-In

Rate today's physical and mental/emotional wellbeing from 1 = bad to 10 = good. Separately record your longer-term baseline severity from 1 = very severe to 10 = mild; this is your usual illness level over recent weeks, not today's overall feeling. Add a crash or separate illness flag when relevant. Steps, sleep, and HRV can import through Health Connect or be entered manually.

Morning — review
Review Today's Plan

In Care view, open Pace Analysis for a simple plan, body signal, and the most important next step. In Care Plus view, the same plan appears alongside your full budget and supporting detail. If your behaviour is set to Care, suitable protective changes may already be applied and listed; with Care Plus behaviour, pending changes wait for you under Needs your action.

Throughout the day
Keep an Eye on Your Pace

Use the simple plan and live zone in Care view, or the detailed Pace Points budget in Care Plus view. Both are different ways of seeing the same daily pacing guidance.

As needed
Care Log Entries

Log medications, treatments, notable triggers and an optional estimated energy cost. Entries appear in logs, trends, reports and exports; they do not currently alter Pace Points.

When planning an activity
Plan Ahead

Review the next three broad guidance bands and check a named activity against the current context. The result is cautious guidance, not predicted safe Pace Points. After the activity, record what happened so future plans can use delayed outcomes rather than only whether you followed the suggestion.

Evening
Review Your Day

Complete the evening fatigue questions when they become available. Care Plus users can also inspect the detailed movement and heart-rate analysis; Care users can stay with the simpler daily plan.

Weekly or when useful
Review Longer-Term Patterns

Use the weekly report, Trends, or the optional AI Coach when you want a longer view. PACEme may also suggest reviewing a personal threshold when your recent pattern no longer matches the current setting.


AI Coach

Setting up your AI Pacing Coach.

The AI Coach receives a bounded summary of recent pacing data and offers plain-language observations and possible next steps. PACEme calculates basic counts, averages and trends locally. Compact and free models receive those checked facts, current local guidance and concise dated evidence containing the available check-in, Pace Points, sleep, steps, heart-rate, HRV, POTS, crash, symptom and note fields. Raw database JSON is omitted, but the model is not left blind to the person's history. Higher-detail paid routes may receive bounded rows oldest to newest. The Coach does not calculate or override the app's local result. Several free options are available.

Health data noticeWhen you use the AI Coach, your pacing data is sent to the AI provider you select. The first time you tap "Analyse My Data", you'll be shown a full disclaimer and asked to confirm. Always review the privacy policy of your chosen provider.
Keys stay separate: PACEme stores a different key for each provider. After entering a key, tap Load Supported Models. PACEme checks the live catalogue, offers approved chat-model families and can replace a retired model with a checked alternative. A completely new model family still requires a PACEme compatibility update rather than being trusted automatically.
PACEme keeps the numbers grounded: basic counts and trends are calculated on the phone. HRV score out of 100 and HRV RMSSD in milliseconds are different scales and are never compared with one another. Before a provider reply is saved or shown, PACEme locally removes unsupported medication instructions, invented limits or activities, mixed-unit HRV comparisons, graded schedules and cause-and-effect claims while retaining useful parts of the answer. A safety-label-only or otherwise empty answer is not treated as coaching; PACEme shows its checked context and a flexible local plan instead. Accepted AI text can still be wrong, so Pace Analysis and your symptoms remain the primary guide.

Ollama Cloud
Ollama's hosted API works directly from PACEme with an Ollama API key; no local server or powerful computer is required. PACEme recommends gpt-oss:120b, with gpt-oss:20b as a lighter fallback. Load Supported Models checks Ollama's live cloud catalogue, adds compatible new versions from approved general-purpose families and can replace a retired selection automatically.

  • Open Settings → API keys and create a key
  • In PACEme → tap the Settings gear → AI Provider → Ollama Cloud

Google Gemini
Google AI Studio offers a limited free tier. PACEme recommends the current stable gemini-3.7-flash model when free quota is available. Stable Flash-Lite models are lighter fallbacks; preview Pro models are excluded. Error 429 means the Google project's current request, token or daily quota is exhausted. Check usage in Google AI Studio, wait for the relevant reset, or use another provider. Free-tier data terms apply; paid Gemini accounts have different limits and data handling.
  • Go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with your Google account
  • Click Get API Key → Create API Key
  • In PACEme → tap the Settings gear at the top of the main screen → AI Provider → Google Gemini
  • Paste your key, then tap Load Supported Models

Free models
OpenRouter
OpenRouter gives you access to changing model pools through one key. PACEme currently recommends the fixed nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b:free model and also accepts checked Nemotron Super free-family updates from the live catalogue. Random, safety-only, coding and paid routes are excluded so a request cannot unexpectedly be sent to a classifier or paid model. If a fixed free endpoint returns 404, PACEme refreshes the live catalogue and retries one different approved fixed free model; if none is available, it asks you to retry later or use another provider.

For paid use, gpt-5.6-sol is the strongest-output recommendation. gpt-5.6-terra is the recommended balance of output quality and cost, while Luna and GPT-4.1 remain lower-cost compatible choices when available.

For paid use, claude-opus-5 is the strongest-output recommendation. claude-sonnet-5 is the recommended balance of quality and cost, with Haiku as a lighter option. A paid Anthropic API account is required.

xAI Grok
PACEme checks xAI's live catalogue and recommends the newest stable numbered Grok chat model it returns, currently grok-4.6. Image, video, voice, coding and unknown model families are excluded. The xAI API is billed per token. Free access to Grok in a website or consumer app does not provide free API calls, so xAI is deliberately shown under paid providers.

Using the AI Coach

Initial Analysis

  • Open AI Pacing Coach from the main menu
  • Accept the health data disclaimer (shown once only)
  • Tap Analyse My Data
  • The app sends checked facts and current guidance to compact/free routes; higher-detail routes may also receive bounded daily rows
  • Receive observations about available patterns, uncertainty and practical options

Follow-up Questions

  • After the initial analysis, a chat box appears
  • Ask focused questions such as "What patterns are supported?", "How could I simplify an unavoidable task?", or "How is my HRV trend?"
  • For next-day guidance, the Coach should stay flexible and symptom-led rather than inventing numeric targets or a graded timetable
  • The coach remembers the bounded context supplied for that conversation, not your whole database
  • Tap Reset / New Analysis to start fresh

Features Guide

Every screen, explained.

Care and Care Plus do not just change a setting. They present different screen journeys. Choose the guide that matches the mode button shown near the top of your home screen.

One distinction before the screen guides: the Care/Care Plus button on the home screen changes what you see. The separate Your primary mode choice in App Settings changes how suggestions are handled. Because those choices can be mixed, each guide below describes the visible screens rather than assuming whether suggestions are automatic or approval-first.

Care mode: every screen

The calmer visual route. It keeps the daily menu short, simplifies check-in and pacing controls, and leaves the deeper analysis screens out of the main menu. Full Pace Analysis is still available when you want to view the numbers or make a change.

4. First-day Setup Hub

Complete five real tasks in any order: reminders, heart-rate monitor, Health Connect step and sleep import, first camera HRV reading, and first morning check-in. It checks actual progress rather than merely marking pages as read.

Shows the mode button, behaviour status, monitor connection, live heart rate, today's plain-English plan, crash catch-up, seven-day crash status, and POTS or weather context when enabled. The bottom bar handles daily navigation and More tools holds secondary features.

Focuses on today's essential information: wearable sync, sleep, steps, HRV, three core morning ratings, crash or illness flags, notes, and the evening fatigue check-in. Custom fields, source controls, manual-data controls, HRV History, and date backfill stay hidden.

Uses the phone camera and flash for a 60-second fingertip reading, shows measurement progress, then saves the result for today's check-in and personal baseline.

The simplified pacing screen: today's plan, the most important action, body signal, and clear lists of what has happened and what still needs review. It avoids the full dashboard when you only need the answer for today.

9. Detailed Pace Analysis from Care

Opens the complete budget, date controls, POTS and strictness controls, plan, body-state detail, suggestions, and energy ring. Use it to understand the numbers, review anything awaiting you, or change pacing controls without leaving Care as your normal view.

10. Pace Settings: Care view

DETAILED PACE ANALYSIS → PACE SETTINGS

Sets illness level, overall pacing sensitivity, and optional POTS, screen-time, and weather signals. Instead of showing the full threshold sliders, Care provides one clear button to update personal thresholds through the guided survey.

A short guided form for your step ceiling, heart-rate limit, sleep goal, physical and mental effort anchors, and fatigue balance. New values apply from today forward and do not rewrite old days.

When weather is enabled, shows today's advice, forecast freshness, a seven-day feels-like temperature and pressure chart, daily risk markers, and a plain explanation of why heat or pressure may have been flagged.

13. Missed crash periods

Marks yesterday or another crash day up to 14 days ago when you were too unwell to log. It adds the crash record without inventing missing symptom, sleep, or activity data.

14. Care Log

Records triggers, medications, treatments, side effects, notes, optional event energy cost, and your own custom categories. Entries support logs and comparisons but do not currently alter Pace Points.

15. Weekly report PDF

Builds a shareable report covering the latest week of check-ins, capacity, activity, heart rate, pacing, symptoms, and recovery patterns. Android opens the finished PDF so it can be saved or shared.

Shows daily summaries and individual updates for ME/CFS, Long COVID, POTS and dysautonomia, Lyme, MCAS, Fibromyalgia, and EDS/HSD. The feed, search, topic tabs, severity filters, sorting and available article summaries are public. A PACEme Research key adds saved/read syncing across devices.

Shows the source, date, description, saved status, and AI summary when available. You can request a missing summary or open the original article in your browser.

Analyses a bounded summary of your recent pacing record when you ask it to, then lets you discuss the result in plain language. It cannot calculate or override the local pacing result.

Explains the proposed anonymous research programme and stores your opt-in or opt-out choice. The app states clearly that no research data is shared when you have not opted in.

Collects the information needed to answer a support request or reproduce a bug, then submits it to PACEme and returns a ticket number. Problem reports offer an optional previewable technical extract; it is included only when you select the diagnostics checkbox.

Creates a machine-readable ZIP of CSV files and a guide. It excludes keys, AI chats, diagnostics, location and internal model data. The ZIP is not encrypted.

Care Plus mode: every screen

The full-detail visual route. It keeps all daily screens available and adds direct access to historical HRV, movement analysis, long-term trends, care-event comparisons, and the raw heart-rate and activity audit.

Refreshes the starting anchors used by your pacing plan through a shorter guided route than editing each detailed setting separately.

Breaks one day into Pace Point costs, heart-rate zones, timeline, peak and resting figures, step context, and elevated episodes. Choose another date or adjust the episode threshold directly on the screen.

Compares symptoms, capacity, Pace Points, HRV, heart-rate summaries, POTS stability when enabled, and your own custom metrics across preset, custom, or all-time ranges.

15. Care events in the selected trend range

Lists causes, medications, treatments, and notes recorded during the dates currently selected in Trends. Long-press an entry when you need to remove it.

16. Heart-rate & activity audit

The raw day-level audit: heart-rate readings, steps, Pace Points over time, and an active-hours filter, all aligned to the same timeline for detailed investigation.

17. Missed crash periods

Records yesterday or another crash day up to 14 days ago when normal check-in was not possible, without fabricating other missing data.

Stores causes and triggers, medications and side effects, treatments and ideas, notes, dates, optional energy cost and custom categories. These entries can be compared with health trends without changing Pace Points.

Generates the latest readable seven-day clinician report and opens it in Android's PDF viewer for saving or sharing. Automatic report day and time are configured in App Settings.

Combines topic-specific daily summaries with searchable individual updates for all supported conditions. Filter by critical or high priority, summaries, saved items, topic, or date and priority sort.

Displays the article information and AI summary, lets you save or unsave it, request a summary when needed, and open the original source.

Creates an on-demand analysis from a bounded recent summary and supports follow-up questions within the same conversation. It cannot override the app's local pacing result.

Asks what you need help with, what has happened, what you have tried, and how the team can help, then submits the request and returns a ticket number.

Collects a short summary, reproduction steps, actual result, and expected result so a fault can be investigated properly. You can preview and choose to include a filtered recent diagnostic extract; nothing is attached automatically.

This directory covers the app's usable destinations. Android permission pages, external article/PDF viewers, confirmation dialogs, and the brief launch splash are not listed as PACEme screens.

The 2-Day Edit Window

You can edit data for today, yesterday, and the day before — and nothing older. This applies to fatigue scores, sleep, steps, symptom sliders, crash checkbox, POTS slider, and Pacing Strictness.

Once the edit window has passed, the dated entry stays fixed. This keeps comparisons, reports and later learning based on a consistent sequence rather than a history that silently changes.

Illness profile and calibration settings are always forward-looking — they apply from today onwards and never alter historical records.

Calibration is Today-Only

Your Personal Calibration anchors (Step Limit, HR Threshold, and Sleep Goal) can only be re-set while viewing today — never from a past-date view. Changes always apply from today forward and never alter historical records. This protects the integrity of past pacing data and the patterns the intelligence model learns from.

Couldn't Log? (Crash Catch-Up)

If you were too ill to open the app during a crash period, use Log past crash on the home screen. This lets you mark yesterday or another day up to 14 days back as a crash day without inventing other missing data.

  • Only the crash flag is added — step counts, sleep and wellbeing scores are untouched
  • The app can then include the missed crash in later dated guidance and pattern comparisons
  • Designed specifically for genuine crash periods where the app was inaccessible

For days still within the 2-day window, use the normal Daily Check-In to correct any mistakes directly.

Why not allow full editing of older days? Trend analysis, reports and personal learning all depend on a consistent dated record. The short edit window allows recent mistakes to be corrected while keeping longer-term comparisons meaningful. Missing information remains missing rather than being treated as a normal day.

Common questions.

  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
  • Ensure the HR monitor is in pairing mode (most blink rapidly when unpaired)
  • If previously paired to another device, unpair it there first
  • On Android, grant PACEme Bluetooth and location permissions in phone Settings → Apps → PACEme → Permissions
  • If connection drops frequently, keep the phone within 1–2 metres of the monitor

Do not change one setting from a single unusual day. First check the selected date, confirmed check-in, imported sleep, steps and HRV, POTS adjustment, strictness and any missing-data message.

If the mismatch continues across ordinary days, review your illness profile and personal starting points in Pace Settings. PACEme may also suggest a review when enough recent evidence no longer fits the current setting.

  • Open the Health Connect app on your phone (search in app drawer if not visible)
  • Go to App permissions and find PACEme — grant Read permissions for Sleep, Steps, and Heart Rate
  • Also check that your wearable app (e.g. Fitbit, Garmin Connect) has Health Connect permissions granted
  • In PACEme open App Settings → Health Connect → Manage data to see whether useful data has arrived recently, import again, or change the source
  • Tap the Settings gear at the top of the main screen → AI Provider and confirm the correct provider is selected
  • Double-check your API key is pasted correctly — no extra spaces, and the full key including its prefix, such as Groq gsk_..., OpenRouter sk-or-... or xAI xai-...
  • Check your account on the provider's website — OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI require API billing. Free consumer chat access is separate from API access
  • For Groq: keys are free and active immediately after creation at console.groq.com
  • For Ollama Cloud: create an API key at ollama.com/settings/keys; a local Ollama installation or server address is not required
  • If you change provider, paste that provider's own key. PACEme stores the keys separately and does not reuse one provider's key for another
  • If the error says a model is retired, unavailable, or unsupported, return to App Settings and tap Load Supported Models. PACEme checks its tested choices against the provider's live list and falls back only to another tested model.

The PACEme Research key is separate from any AI provider key. The public Research Feed, condition-specific daily summaries and available article summaries do not need a key. The key syncs saved/read state across devices and can request generation when an article summary is not yet available. On the Insights page, enter your email and verify the six-digit code. An email used before reconnects its existing key; a new email creates a free key after verification.

To set it in the app, open App Settings and enter it under Research Pacing Model API. The feed will not load until a valid key is present.

Yes — use Log past crash on the home screen. This opens a dedicated screen where you can mark yesterday or another day up to 14 days ago.

PACEme locks data older than 2 days to protect the reliability of your historical trends and calibration data. You can correct today, yesterday, and the day before via the normal Daily Check-In.

If the data you need to correct is older because you were in a crash and couldn't open the app, use the "Couldn't log?" button on the home screen to mark those days as crash days. See the Data & Edit Window section for full details.

Core pacing data stays on your device by default. Optional actions use only the information needed for the feature you choose:

  • AI Coach: A bounded recent pacing summary is sent directly to your chosen AI provider when you request an analysis or send a message. You must accept a disclaimer before first use
  • Research Feed: The app sends your Research key and article read/saved actions to the PACEme feed service. Your pacing and health data are not included
  • Support: The support or problem form sends the details you enter and limited device information. A problem report includes a filtered diagnostic extract only when you select that option; you can preview it first
  • Exports: A PDF or structured ZIP goes only to the destination you select. ZIP exports are not encrypted

No account is required for core pacing. Review each optional service's notice before using it.

Yes — but with one important caveat. Your pacing data and app state are stored locally on each device and are not currently synced between devices.

In practice that means:

  • Daily check-ins, HR, HRV, pace points, and suggestion history are kept only on the device they were entered on
  • If you accept or revert a suggestion on your phone, your tablet won't know about that decision
  • Suggestion actions and automatic protective changes are per-device, so another device may show a suggestion as pending again
  • Research Feed read/saved articles are the one exception — these sync across devices if you set a PACEme API key in App Settings
  • Visual mode, suggestion behaviour, illness profile, and thresholds are also per-device — set them on each device the first time you use it

For most people the simplest approach is to use PACEme on the one device that's always with you. If you need data on more than one device, full cross-device sync is on our roadmap.
