From first launch to daily pacing — this guide covers setting up the app, understanding your data, configuring the AI Coach, and getting the most out of every feature.
PACEme Care is a pacing and self-management app for people living with energy-limiting illness. It combines heart rate, movement, sleep, HRV and daily check-ins into an approximate personal pacing estimate — your Pace Points — and updates the guidance as new information arrives.
Unlike a generic fitness app, PACEme is designed around the energy envelope, PEM and autonomic symptoms. It considers delayed worsening and learns from ordinary stable, improving and worsening days, but it cannot guarantee that it will predict a crash or define a safe activity allowance.
Core pacing data stays on your device by default. Optional online actions explain what is sent before you use them.
First launch has three parts: a short personal setup, a screenshot walkthrough of the app, and a live setup hub that helps you connect the services and devices you want to use. You can skip optional tasks and return to them later.
Choose Care for a simpler, lower-cognitive-load view or Care Plus for the fuller readout. On first setup, this choice also sets the matching suggestion behaviour: Care applies suitable protective changes automatically, while Care Plus asks before applying them.
Choose Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Very Severe as the starting point for your daily pacing budget. You can change this later in Pace Settings.
The calibration survey asks about your step limit, heart-rate warning point, sleep goal, and what hard physical and mental effort mean for you. These are personal starting points, not crash boundaries or medical thresholds.
Before setup finishes, you can tell PACEme if you have POTS, dysautonomia, or POTS-like symptoms; allow phone screen time to be used as an extra cognitive-load signal; and enable weather guidance for heat or pressure changes. All three are optional and can be changed later in Pace Settings.
PACEme next shows a guided screenshot tour for your current view. The Care walkthrough focuses on the simpler daily screens; the Care Plus walkthrough also covers deeper analysis and controls. You do not have to finish it in one sitting: close it and replay it later without changing your health data.
The final screen opens real setup actions in the app. It helps you turn on morning and evening reminders, connect a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor, enable step and sleep import through Health Connect, take your first HRV reading, and complete your first morning check-in.
Once set up, your daily routine with PACEme takes around 5–10 minutes total. The rest happens automatically in the background.
If you track HRV, sync it from your wearable or take a camera reading in PACEme. Measuring at a similar time and position each day makes changes from your own usual level easier to interpret.
Rate today's physical and mental/emotional wellbeing from 1 = bad to 10 = good. Separately record your longer-term baseline severity from 1 = very severe to 10 = mild; this is your usual illness level over recent weeks, not today's overall feeling. Add a crash or separate illness flag when relevant. Steps, sleep, and HRV can import through Health Connect or be entered manually.
In Care view, open Pace Analysis for a simple plan, body signal, and the most important next step. In Care Plus view, the same plan appears alongside your full budget and supporting detail. If your behaviour is set to Care, suitable protective changes may already be applied and listed; with Care Plus behaviour, pending changes wait for you under Needs your action.
Use the simple plan and live zone in Care view, or the detailed Pace Points budget in Care Plus view. Both are different ways of seeing the same daily pacing guidance.
Log medications, treatments, notable triggers and an optional estimated energy cost. Entries appear in logs, trends, reports and exports; they do not currently alter Pace Points.
Review the next three broad guidance bands and check a named activity against the current context. The result is cautious guidance, not predicted safe Pace Points. After the activity, record what happened so future plans can use delayed outcomes rather than only whether you followed the suggestion.
Complete the evening fatigue questions when they become available. Care Plus users can also inspect the detailed movement and heart-rate analysis; Care users can stay with the simpler daily plan.
Use the weekly report, Trends, or the optional AI Coach when you want a longer view. PACEme may also suggest reviewing a personal threshold when your recent pattern no longer matches the current setting.
The AI Coach receives a bounded summary of recent pacing data and offers plain-language observations and possible next steps. PACEme calculates basic counts, averages and trends locally. Compact and free models receive those checked facts, current local guidance and concise dated evidence containing the available check-in, Pace Points, sleep, steps, heart-rate, HRV, POTS, crash, symptom and note fields. Raw database JSON is omitted, but the model is not left blind to the person's history. Higher-detail paid routes may receive bounded rows oldest to newest. The Coach does not calculate or override the app's local result. Several free options are available.
openai/gpt-oss-120b, with openai/gpt-oss-20b only as a lighter fallback. Both receive a concise bounded 7-day analysis so requests fit Groq's free limits more reliably. PACEme uses a short, firm edit window to keep your historical data trustworthy — and a dedicated flow for when you were too ill to log.
You can edit data for today, yesterday, and the day before — and nothing older. This applies to fatigue scores, sleep, steps, symptom sliders, crash checkbox, POTS slider, and Pacing Strictness.
Once the edit window has passed, the dated entry stays fixed. This keeps comparisons, reports and later learning based on a consistent sequence rather than a history that silently changes.
Illness profile and calibration settings are always forward-looking — they apply from today onwards and never alter historical records.
Your Personal Calibration anchors (Step Limit, HR Threshold, and Sleep Goal) can only be re-set while viewing today — never from a past-date view. Changes always apply from today forward and never alter historical records. This protects the integrity of past pacing data and the patterns the intelligence model learns from.
If you were too ill to open the app during a crash period, use Log past crash on the home screen. This lets you mark yesterday or another day up to 14 days back as a crash day without inventing other missing data.
For days still within the 2-day window, use the normal Daily Check-In to correct any mistakes directly.
Do not change one setting from a single unusual day. First check the selected date, confirmed check-in, imported sleep, steps and HRV, POTS adjustment, strictness and any missing-data message.
If the mismatch continues across ordinary days, review your illness profile and personal starting points in Pace Settings. PACEme may also suggest a review when enough recent evidence no longer fits the current setting.
gsk_..., OpenRouter sk-or-... or xAI xai-...The PACEme Research key is separate from any AI provider key. The public Research Feed, condition-specific daily summaries and available article summaries do not need a key. The key syncs saved/read state across devices and can request generation when an article summary is not yet available. On the Insights page, enter your email and verify the six-digit code. An email used before reconnects its existing key; a new email creates a free key after verification.
To set it in the app, open App Settings and enter it under Research Pacing Model API. The feed will not load until a valid key is present.
Yes — use Log past crash on the home screen. This opens a dedicated screen where you can mark yesterday or another day up to 14 days ago.
For days still within the last 2 days, use the normal Daily Check-In instead — those days are fully editable.
PACEme locks data older than 2 days to protect the reliability of your historical trends and calibration data. You can correct today, yesterday, and the day before via the normal Daily Check-In.
If the data you need to correct is older because you were in a crash and couldn't open the app, use the "Couldn't log?" button on the home screen to mark those days as crash days. See the Data & Edit Window section for full details.
Core pacing data stays on your device by default. Optional actions use only the information needed for the feature you choose:
No account is required for core pacing. Review each optional service's notice before using it.

For most people the simplest approach is to use PACEme on the one device that's always with you. If you need data on more than one device, full cross-device sync is on our roadmap.
